Abstract

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) allows visualization of apthous ulcerations and areas of denudation previously unseen on small bowel radiology and ileoscopy, both of which are considered to be manifestations of early Crohn's disease. If this concept is proven correct, WCE will have a pivotal role in the evaluation of patients with suspected but clinically unconfirmed Crohn's disease, and for reclassifying patients with indeterminant colitis. Whether medical treatment of these presumed early Crohn's lesions will alter the natural course of Crohn's disease remains to be determined.
