To the Editor: We read the excellent article by Ahn et al. (N Engl J Med 291:376–380, 1974) on vincristine therapy of idiopathic and secondary thrombocytopenia with interest. The authors relate the increase in platelet count induced in idiopathic thrombocytopenia mainly to the immunosuppressive properties of the drug although they consider that this action may not entirely account for its therapeutic effect. We differ from this view; except that vincristine happens to have immunosuppressive properties, there is no evidence to suggest that this is its mode of action.
