Hard sphere segregation under gravity was studied using a variational approach. The minimization of the free energy functional for hard spheres and hard disks was demonstrated. The crossover between the two types of segregation occurring in the liquid state was investigated using the local density approximation. The results were found to be in qualitative agreement with the results of simulation and of a simple model based on condensation.
