Abstract

The prevalence of thyroid disease in a small town in Southern Latium in Italy was investigated using ultrasonic evaluations. Normal thyroid gland was detected in 85.7 percent of the children and 17.6 percent in adults. Simple goiter was found in 10.2 percent of the children and in 13.9 percent of the adults. These results show that ultrasonic examinations are an ideal screening method for nodular as well as diffuse thyroid diseases.
