Abstract
The advantages of using implantable devices for the control of arrhythmias and the factors hindering their broad clinical acceptance are enumerated. The various types of arrhythmias are identified. The steps that must be taken to determine the applicability of implantable stimulators are outlined. Technical problems are discussed. The evolution of techniques and devices is examined.
