Our results demonstrated normal basal serum levels of T4 and TSH, but a blunted TSH response following TRH stimulation. Examination of mentally retarded men without macro-orchidism or demonstrable fragile site on the X chromosome showed similar findings, suggesting that the abnormal response in fragile X subjects is not related to the chromosome abnormality. Further investigation is needed to clarify the cause of the decreased ability of the anterior pituitary gland to secrete TSH after TRH administration in mentally retarded individuals and its relationship, if any, to impaired intellectual function.
