Abstract

The role of the gap in single pole heads (SPH) in perpendicular recording was studied. A type I SPH was made from one of two identical ring heads with a 0.15 μm gap by focused ion-beam (FIB) trimming to increase the gap to 1 μm. The recording onto a medium with a RH is fundamentally different from the recording with a SPH.
