The rationale for and pre-clinical results of chondroitinase ABC in chemonucleolysis

Abstract

This report details the results of three enzymes, chymopapain, collagenase and chondroitinase ABC (CABC), for chemonucleolysis of the spine intervertebral disc. The deleterious effects of chymopapain and collagenase have led to pre-clinical trials of chondroitinase ABC. Animal studies of chondroitinase ABC are promising with respect to less severe side effects and tissue damage than what has been observed with chymopapain and collagenase. The author suggests chondroitinase ABC as a safer alternative to other chemonucleolysis enzymes, and that human trials are the next step in determining the efficacy and safety of this enzyme for the treatment of symptomatic disc displacement.
