Abstract

A new President (W.J. Whelan) and three new Executive Committee Members (Y. Anraku, A. Azzi, and V. Turk) took office at the Congress, in San Francisco, in August 1997 and a new Treasurer (R. B. Beechey) at the beginning of 1998, respectively. Then the General Secretary resigned in mid-February and was replaced by an Acting General Secretary to complete the term which expires at the end of 2000. There has been increased collaboration with the regional organizations, and especially FEBS, which has joined IUBMB as a sponsor of the next Congress in July 2000. A new Editor-in-Chief and a new publisher have been appointed for one of our journals. Finally the Executive Committee (EC) met for three full days early in July and took important decisions on many matters. This summary will highlight the important happenings in four areas.
