Abstract

Because there are few large-scale RCTs for many aspects of perioperative medicine, preoperative cardiac consultation is a combination of art and science based on clinical experience, observational studies and expert consensus opinion. This review highlights key concepts based on the ACC and ESC perioperative guidelines. Future research will hopefully lead to more evidence-based recommendations and allow the consultant to better optimise the patient's medical condition leading to improved outcome.
