Abstract

A computer software program, The Automated BIS Consultant (ABC), was developed to automatically record and analyze the bispectral index, heart rate, blood pressure, and end tidal volatile anesthetic and nitrous oxide concentrations. Using a set of expert rules derived from clinical experiences, ABC provides advice about the adequacy of the depth of anesthesia. These rules attempt to separate the sedative/hypnotic component of the anesthetic from the analgesic and hemodynamic components.
