The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) was developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency to provide the public an overall assessment of the air quality on a regular basis. Currently, the PSI does not include the synergistic effects of the major pollutants. A methodology was developed to take account the synergistic effects of the priority air pollutants, and therefore provide a better understanding of the severity of these damage caused by the pollutants.
