Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of thymus gland extracts (lotion and shampoo) in the treatment of female pattern baldness. Thirty patients, aged from 16 to 72 years (mean 37.6), affected by female pattern baldness of I and II grades according to the Ludwig classification, were enrolled. The clinical evaluation, pull test and trichogram were carried out at the beginning of the study and at the 4th month. The trichogram was performed on the diffuse alopecia area and on the region apparently not affected by female pattern baldness. At the end of the 4th month of treatment (1 application/day for the lotion; 2 applications/week for the shampoo) 16 patients showed improvement of female pattern baldness with a slightly increased number of telogen hair roots; one of these showed a regrowth of intermediate hairs in the frontal-temporal regions. Thirteen patients did not note any clinical improvement, but in 10 the trichogram showed a decreased number of telogen hair roots with an increased anagen/telogen ratio. According to the German literature, our study seems to confirm the efficacy of a local treatment with thymus gland preparations in female pattern baldness, although the mechanism of action is not clear.
