N2 - To the Editor: In reference to the article, “Idiopathic Hirsutism,” by Kirschner et al. (N Engl J Med 294:637, 1976), it would be interesting to try to explain the dexamethasone suppression on the ovarian androgens by its effect on the metabolic clearance rates âi.e., by the increase in the metabolic clearance of testosterone. One of the effects of dexamethasone is to increase metabolic clearance rate, and it was of interest to find that the metabolic clearance rates of patients who did not respond were already elevated. One could therefore hypothesize Chat there is a form of the ovarian hirsutism.
