The Authors take out some epidemiological data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) survey about goiter in Italy nation-wide and in each single region. The evaluation of the goiter risk factor obtained by measuring the relationship between the yearly appraisal of goiter registered cases and the mean of resident people shows the enhancement of the goiter risk factor throughout Italy considered as a single unit and especially in its Central and Southern regions. Goiter must be treated. So, as far as regards the much-debated issue of levothyroxine goiter therapy - whether should it be suppressive or, rather, substitutive - our study confirms that suppressive doses are, from a statistical point of view, no better than substitutive ones in reducing both number and volume of thyroid nodules.
