Scanning electron microscopy of zonulolysis by alpha chymotrypsin

Abstract

Anterior segments from owl monkey eyes were exposed to the action of alpha chymotrypsin in vitro. The resulting zonulolysis was followed by scanning electron microscopy. The filaments, which are the subunits of zonular fibers, were fragmented by the action of the enzymes. Fragments from adjacent filaments remain adherent to one another to form irregular particles of varying sizes. A skelton of amorphous material remained after the filaments were completely digested.
