Rightsizing expectations for bioenergy with carbon capture and storage toward ambitious climate goals

Abstract

The Paris Agreement establishes a long-term temperature goal of limiting global mean warming well below 2°C above preindustrial levels. Current deployments of proven approaches for limiting climate change, however, are far from the rates and scales needed to meet this goal. Against this backdrop, technologies for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, especially bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), are increasingly asserted as essential, provoking debate. Here, we rightsize expectations for BECCS in ambitious climate response. This chapter evaluates potential constraints to BECCS at very large scale and in scenarios in which global temperatures peak and then decline. It also analyzes near-term opportunities for catalyzing BECCS development, demonstration, and deployment. The examples used include both global analyses and regional consideration of near-term options in the United States. On balance, we identify robust opportunities to deploy BECCS technologies toward ambitious climate goals, though likely at smaller scales than those asserted in the present literature.
