Abstract
It has recently been shown that for an image or video transmission scheme to be both efficient and robust in practice that a joint source-channel coding approach is necessary. In this work, we discuss recent efforts in the field of joint source-channel coding of images and video. We then present a general methodology for determining the optimal tradeoff between source and channel coding as a function of channel characteristics for transmission of video. Further reduction in the computational complexity of this methodology through the use of models is discussed. Results of the optimal rate allocation procedure are presented for selected source and channel coding schemes and as a function of channel parameters.
