Abstract

Kuwait Oil Co (KOC) is the body principally responsible for oil spills preparedness in Kuwait. The company has policies to improve its oil spill response. The firm continues to train its oil spill response team to ensure top-level preparedness. KOC was effective in its role in combating the oil spills during 1991 Gulf War. With the oil recovery wall system, countries to the north or south of the State of Kuwait will be protected from any unexpected oil spill which may occur in the future. The Oil Recovery Wall, which has the Oil-Collection Units, is proposed to contain the oil within the source region, and to prevent the spread to the rest of the Gulf. The Oil Recovery Wall is designed to collect the spilled oil within the vicinity of the wall, thus preventing the oil from spreading widely into the seawater and the environment. The design details of the Oil-Collection Unit were discussed. Tests on a laboratory-scale model showed promising results. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 26th Arctic and Marine Oilspill Program Technical Seminar (Victoria, British Columbia 6/10-13/2003).
