The pituitary response to the intravenous administration of 50 μg of synthetic LH-RH was studied in 6 patients with Stein-Levcnthal syndrome and 12 with functional amenorrhea-The results were compared with those obtained from 10 normal menstruating women. LH-RH released comparable amounts of FSII and LH in patients with Stcin-Levcnthal syndrome and normal eumenorrheic women. Patients with functional amenorrhea showed greater LH baseline levels and greater LH release after LH-RH, however FSII release was not significantly dif-ferent in the three groups of patients. It is concluded from this study that the LH resume to LH-RH is different between patients with Stcin-Leventhal syndrome and functional amenorrhea suggesting that such resjMiase is likely determined by the level of circulating sex steroids and the concentration of endogenous LH-RH.
