Abstract
Attention to the details of preoperative preparation of the patient, intraoperative technique, and good postoperative care can prevent complications and increase the likelihood of successful elective lumbar spine surgery. Such relevant topics as patient education, smoking and nonsmoking patients, transfusions, and medications are included.
