Abstract
Presents a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of marine ecosystems. Attention is focused upon the ecological basis for maintenance and variability of populations of exploitable marine fish and invertebrates. The use of nested scales, where a variety of different processes act simultaneously but with different characteristic extents and durations, is emphasised as a basic conceptual framework for study of the marine ecosystem.
