Rare-earth perovskites with the overall composition La1-xM 1-yO3-δ (M - transition metal, 0.0 ≤ x, y ≤ 0.2) have been synthesized. Electrocatalyst inks were prepared via mixing the perovskites with an active carbon powder and Nafion solution. Membrane electrode assemblies were fabricated using the electrocatalyst inks, carbon cloth, and Nafion membranes. Electrochemical measurements were conducted in methanol solutions. The onset potential of methanol oxidation on La1-xFe 1-yO3-δ electrocatalysts was 0.15 V more cathodic than those on 20% Pt/C and 40% Pt-Ru/C, indicating an easier initiation of methanol oxidation on La1-xFe1-yO3-δ. The apparent exchange current density for La1-xFe1-yO 3-δ was 20% greater than that for 20% Pt/C but 50% less than that for 40% Pt-Ru/C.
