The guidelines for ultra-high density perpendicular magnetic recording were defined using three dimensional (3D) modeling. The demagnetization fields in recording media decreased and the stray fields increased on reducing trackwidth below 1000 nm for a 25 nm thick recording layer. The recording at track densities were demonstrated using spin-stand and MFM experiments with focused ion beam (FIB) trimmed writer and reader. A bit error ratio (BER) of 10 -7 along a 120 nm wide track was shown using bath-tub curve.
