Neurotransmitter regulation of CRF secretion in vitro

Abstract

A decade prior to elucidation of the sequence of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), investigators were already studying the neurotransmitter regulation of CRF release in vitro using bioassays for ACTH and adrenal glucocorticoids as a measure of “CRF” activity. Even with the availability of sensitive and specific radioimmunoassays for CRF, considerable controversy exists concerning the role of various neurotransmitters in regulating the secretion of hypothalamic CRF.
