Abstract

Work during the past 50 years has highlighted the complex interplay between endocrine gland secretions and the central nervous system. This article provides a basic overview of the major hormone systems, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the thyroid axis, as well as growth hormone, prolactin, oxytocin, and vasopressin systems, with a focus on their relationship to affective disorders. Particular focus is on research identifying alterations in hormone availability (either excess or deficiency) and the relationship to mental illness.
