Abstract

The present chapter covers the various types of tattoos available for commercial use, the different lasers available to remove them, and how to select the appropriate laser for a particular tattoo. Q-switched lasers are used for tattoo removal. Each tattoo should be classified into one of five types and treated accordingly. The Q switch generates rapid pulse durations that damage the integrity of individual tattoo ink particles. The color present in the tattoo determines which wavelength of laser is most appropriate. In addition, preoperative care, safety and technique during laser therapy, and post-treatment considerations are discussed.
