A recently developed radioimmunoassay for rat calcitonin was applied to the study of rat medullary thyroid carcinoma. With this procedure we have demonstrated the presence of abnormal concentrations of calcitonin in this rat tumor. The results suggest that this animal form of medullary thyroid carcinoma should provide a useful experimental model for the study of this tumor which also occurs in humans.
