Hunting for Saharan Air with the NOAA G-IV jet

During the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, the NOAA/AOML/Hurricane Research Division conducted the first-ever aircraft missions for its Saharan Air Layer Experiment (SALEX) as part of its Intensity Forecasting Experiment. GPS dropwindsondes were launched from the G-IV jet to sample the SAL and its interactions with Tropical Storm Irene and an African easterly wave that later spawned Tropical Depression 19. GPS dropwindsonde data from the SALEX flights confirmed that the SAL outbreaks that were sampled contained extremely dry air, strong midlevel jets and strong temperature inversions at their bases. It was also evident that the NOAA GFS forecast model was overestimating the moisture in the SAL by a factor of 2-3.
