High-speed coherent switching in fine grains

Abstract

The effect of the relative head-to-medium velocity on the switching dynamics of individual grains is studied using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation of motion. The coercive field of a grain may increase or decrease with velocity depending on the direction of crystal anisotropy. An asymmetry is present and the coercivity of an ensemble of grains with random in-plane anisotropy is found to increase, in agreement with measurements on a CoCr longitudinal magnetic recording medium.
