Abstract

The large scale meridional circulation in the tropical eastern Pacific was studied. It was observed that the deep meridional cell resembling the zonal mean Hadley Cell, was not the only prominent feature in the large-scale circulation in the region. A shallow overturning circulation cell, with its upper return flow atop the boundary layer, was also observed in the circulation. The possible dynamics and implications of the shallow cell were also discussed.
