Abstract

Simple thermodynamic arguments predicts that there is a weakening of atmospheric circulation in response to surface warming due to the rapid increase in water vapor. The response of the tropical atmospheric and oceanic circulation was examined with use of a coordinated set of twenty-first-century climate model experiments. The atmospheric overturning weakens at the zonally asymmetric component of the circulation which drives a reduction of the near-equatorial Pacific easterly winds while inducing changes to the thermal structure and circulation of the tropical oceans.
