Geotechnical characterization of beach sediments using SAR: Ideas, challenges and preliminary data

Abstract

The rigor of investigating geotechnical soil parameters from satellite-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is discussed. Most recent advances in agricultural research encourage the use of SAR to distinguish between soil types and to determine the soil moisture content. The previously documented linear dependence of the HH polarized SAR backscatter coefficient to moisture content speaks for the use of change detection methods. A preliminary data example suggests that the subaerial dry sand zone and a partially to fully saturated intertidal zone can be identified from the SAR image, and that a more detailed analysis of moisture content is possible.
