Abstract
More and more evidence accumulates that the bronchial circulation provides important adaptive functions besides serving as "vasa nutritia" of the lungs. The present review summarizes our present understanding of the role of the bronchial circulation during alterations of pulmonary gas exchange and acute occlusion of the pulmonary vascular bed, in respiratory heat exchange and hyperreactive airway disease and during hydrostatic and permeability pulmonary edema.
