The cold rolling of strips is analyzed as a plane strain problem using the finite element method. The incremental displacement method is used for the nonlinear analysis of the problem. The stress and strain history of each element can be traced as the material passes through the rolls. The convergence of the method, the flow of material under the rolls, the extent of deformation of the material and the pressure distribution on the rolls are studied in this work. The method is equally applicable for the analysis of rolling of rectangular bars where the spread cannot be neglected.
