Fault tree approach for the reliability analysis of gear trains: Part II - Example applications

The application of fault tree techniques to the analysisof gear trains is considered. The techniques involve thedecomposition of the system iuto a logic diagram or faulttree in which certain basic or primary events lead to aspecified top event which signifies the total failure of thesystem. The fault trees are used to obtain minimal cut setsfrom which the modes of system failure and hence thereliability measure for the top event can be calculated. Themethod of constructing fault trees and the subsequentestimation of reliability of the system is illustrated through anine speed compound gear train and a five speed epicyclicgear train.
