Abstract
Wind vectors observed by the ERS-1 AMI scatterometer were compared with wind and wave ocean buoy observations. Time difference and spatial separation between the two methods of observation were limited to 60 min and 25 km, respectively. The data produced agreed best on the IFREMER winds while the JPL winds were underestimated at low wind ranges and overestimated at high wind ranges. Significant deviations occurred at low wind speeds for wind direction observations, but the data improved significantly when wind speeds less than 5 ms-1 were excluded.
