Estimating nearshore ocean currents from airborne ATI-SAR

Abstract

An ocean wave-dependent directional bias is observed in airborne dual-beam ATI-SAR surface current estimates. We investigate causes for the directional bias by considering deficiencies in the geophysical retrieval calculations related to the use of a non-empirical scattering model. We find that some of the error is likely due to a mismatch between the observed wind waves and those computed from the local wind field.
