Epidemiology of oxidative stress in male fertility

Abstract

Oxidative stress can affect male fertility due to iatrogenic causes or known medical conditions, or may originate from lifestyle factors or environmental toxicants. Iatrogenic causes include centrifugation, cryopreservation, and medications such as cyclophosphamide, opioids, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Lifestyle factors include age, diet, tobacco use, alcohol intake, obesity, and stress. Environmental toxicants include exposure to air pollution, pesticides, plasticizers, heavy metals, and non-ionizing radiation. Pathologies such as urinary tract infection, chronic nonbacterial prostatitis, varicocele, testicular torsion, and cryptorchidism are well-established causes of seminal oxidative stress. However, other causes such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, β-thalassemia, thyroid dysfunction, and hyperhomocysteinemia are only just now becoming recognized as potential causes of seminal oxidative stress. This overview of the various causes of oxidative stress will help identify those with risk factors linked to male infertility. In addition, this overview will hopefully stimulate further research in less well-established causes of seminal oxidative stress, as well as in unique subtypes of oxidative stress, such as the nitrosative stress induced by peroxynitrite and other derivatives of nitric oxide.
