Effect of disc degeneration on streaming potential of human anulus fibrosus

Abstract

The streaming potential responses of anulus fibrosus (AF) from human intervertebral discs to steady and sinusoidal (ie, dynamic) applied pressures were measured and analyzed. It was found that the streaming potential response was linear for non-degenerate AF specimens, and there was no phase lag. For degenerate AF specimens, the response was nonlinear. The magnitudes of the streaming potential response were significantly different between non-degenerate and degenerate AF specimens: non-degenerate = 5.38±0.88 mV/MPa; and degenerate = 4.41 ±0.99 mV/MPa. This phenomenon offers a possible way for detecting AF degeneration in vivo.
