Abstract
Four patients with elevated plasma levels of gonadotropins were treated daily for 7 days with doses of mestranol which were increased each wk. The release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in response to the intravenous injection of 100 μg LH/RH was measured after administration of each weekly dose of estrogen. The differential release of LH and FSH after the same dose of LH/RH depended upon the dose of ingested mestranol. Mestranol seemed to affect basal values as well as response to LH/RH of FSH differently from that of LH. The results emphasize the complex interactions of LH/RH and sex steroids at the pituitary level.
