N2 - Arrhythmias produced by the four major types of pacemakers, that is, continuous asynchronous (fixed rate); ventricular-inhibited (demand); ventricular-triggered; and atrial-triggered, were represented in diagramatic form. This approach was introduced to facilitate the understanding of pacemaker function. Special emphasis was placed in differentiating between pacemaker and ventricular refractoriness. Pacemaker-induced rhythm disturbances should be analyzed not only in the setting of the clinical situation in which they occur, but in the subsetting of the types and models of pacers employed.
