Abstract

To the Editor: Mills and his colleagues in the Diabetes in Early Pregnancy Study (March 17 issue)1 contend that their data support no relation between increased malformation rates among infants of diabetic mothers and glycemic control during organogenesis. We suggest that very different conclusions can be drawn from the data they supply. Table 2 in their study shows that the incidence of “moderate to mild” malformations was virtually identical among infants of early-entry diabetic participants (10 of 347) and infants of control subjects (8 of 389).
