Abstract

The University of Miami (UM) is the largest, most comprehensive private research university in the southeastern United States; it has a well-earned reputation for academic excellence and cultural diversity. Located in the heart of Miami-Dade County, an area challenged by a myriad of diversity and immigration issues, the university is the temporary home to close to 15,300 undergraduate and graduate students from every state and more than 140 nations. It is also employs more than 9,400 full-time faculty and staff. When you walk across the campus you cannot help but notice the diversity of students who enrich the space. The various bodies, accents, and languages one encounters on the campus and in the classrooms contribute to the social and intellectual vibrancy of this campus.
