Computed tomography of the orbit and juxtasellar area in children

Abstract

Children with diseases affecting the orbit or juxtasellar area often present with symptoms and signs which defy precise localization of their pathology. In addition, their clinical presentations frequently do not permit a differentiation to be made between mass lesions which should be surgically removed or irradiated and non-mass producing abnormalities which should be medically treated. Furthermore, their clinical manifestations often do not reveal the exact origin of their lesions or their true extent. Conventional radiographic studies frequently do not overcome these clinical diagnostic dilemmas. Fortunately, however, CT directly demonstrates and localizes both soft tissue and osseous lesions which affect the orbit and juxtasellar area, be they intrinsic or extrinsic, focal or diffuse, primary or secondary, as the cases presented in this paper illustrate. As a result appropriate medical or surgical management can be instituted and patients effectively followed.
