Color Doppler and contrast media in the evaluation of the treatment of focal liver lesions

Abstract

Color Doppler ultrasonography (US) can be used to evaluate tumor response based on changes in vascularity. Intratumoral signals cannot be seen after successful ablation but are still detected in the areas of residual viable tumor. The method is useful when re-treating lesions incompletely destroyed after treatment with percutaneous methods of tumor ablation, allowing precise needle targeting in the viable tumor. However, Doppler US for the evaluation of liver malignancy treatment is limited because small portions of viable neoplastic tissue may be undetected even when color sensitivity is maximized. Computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging must be done at the end of treatment for successful ablation or to rule out false-negative results.
