Case study 9B: Developing a next-generation mobile electronic health record system for the ryder trauma center

Abstract

Developing a next-generation mobile Electronic Health Record system for use by the Miami-based Ryder Trauma Center, part of the Jackson Health System, has provided an opportunity to leverage theoretical concepts like the information supply chain to rapidly transition research objectives into operational systems. Mobile access to training aids, along with a number of other requirements, prompted a multi-year research and development effort to produce the system known as MobileCare, which is in the early stages of a beta deployment at the Ryder Trauma Center. The program goals were threefold: To provide a streamlined mobile interface from which to access electronic health records; to incorporate video conferencing into the software’s communications suite; and finally, to integrate learning and performance support aids. The system architecture consists of a master database that pulls records from a range of sources, including proprietary hospital systems and various commercial health records and telemetry sources.
