To the Editor: In the first part of a three-part series, Harris et al. (July 30 issue)* provided an excellent review of the risk factors for breast cancer, the disease burden, and the methods of screening for breast cancer. Tragically, many women die despite compelling evidence that screening mammography provides an opportunity to detect these cancers at an early stage, when there are more treatment options and survival is improved.
