APPLICATIONS OF MATERIALS IN EXTERNAL DEVICES FOR TRAUMA.

Abstract

In recent years two types of developments have made major changes in the application of materials for external splinting and bracing for the treatment of injuries of the extremities: the widespread use of early functional treatment of limb injuries allowing for early active motion of the extremity during the healing process and the development of numerous materials of thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers, with and without reinforcements as substitutes for plaster. In order to optimize the application of these materials for casts, splints and braces, one must understand the mechanical demands on the devices as a function of treatment technique and time post-injury. Also, one must understand the characteristics of the materials.
