Introduction. We show that the standard connection between gauge invariance, masslessness and null cone propagation is a degenerate one which holds generically only in flat,D = 4, spacetime ,1. We shall see here that standard gauge invariant theories without mass terms do not necessarily propagate on-cone in the simplest generalization of flat space, namely de Sitter geometries, whose light cones are the same as the flat space ones. In particular, we shall investigate the gauge invariant spin 3/2 and 2 fields of linearized cosmological supergravity \[2\] and show that, although they have only two "massless" degrees of freedom, they have support inside the cone. This property holds for the Maxwell system in D :~ 4 de Sitter spaces, which is also "massless" and has (D - 2) degrees of freedom there, as well as for antisymmetric tensor gauge fields. The underlying reason for this paradoxical behavior is that these theories are not conformally invariant; as is well known, for higher spins this invariance requires higher-derivative actions.
